-NEWS- Teen SL to close

Posted in BRN NEWS on August 15, 2010 by Matty

It has been announced at SLCC that 16 to 17 year olds will be moved from the Teen Grid to the Main Grid, with an indicator that Teen SL is most likely to be closed, to tell the truth I thought this would happen a year or two ago.

But, with the influx of under 18s to the main grid, keep in mind region ratings and where you place your creations to save yourself future problems.

I must however point out that the closure of Teen SL is not yet set in stone, the move of 16 to 17 year olds to the main grid is however. Educators at SLCC voiced thee belief on the educational opportunities that teen SL provide, outweigh the Main Grid, however I am sure we will here what is happening in the coming months

-UPDATE- Terrence Linden has stated that LL will not be deleting TG user accounts (avatars) or inventory. However has indicated that accounts maybe instead be put on hold.

BRN TO CLOSE (This post is all over the place, sorry)

Posted in BRN NEWS on March 25, 2010 by Matty

Well everyone, I think my eyes are sore with tears. This is attempt number 42, lets see if I can word this right.

I came to Second Life with a goal, that goal was simple. “Make friends, and not be lonely.” I think I achieved this goal, and yet… I feel like I haven’t met it all these years on. Maybe I am demanding to much from my friends, but I truly hope you forgive me. Despite how many of you have shared your love and support, even fund-raising to buy me a laptop to help keep me coming back to Second Life,  I feel so lonely.

These last few months have been to much, I am dragging myself on the ground to move just constantly in tears. I am spending sometimes up to 16 hours staring at my computer screen waiting for messages from people, anyone… just a hello… just a how are you. These messages never come… and the messages for requests of content and objects, are also constantly making me feel used. I don’t feel like anyone remembers me as a person.

So yes my departure from Second Life is selfish, but sometimes we have to think of ourselves first.

As said earlier I have been in Second Life since its beta, I have seen so many changes. Its hard to imagine that we only hit 1 million users on October 18th. Now look at that population. I am truly impressed with what SL has become, but at the same time I am also saddened. Linden Lab as a corporation is distancing itself from the community, to the point where… I truly believe there is no community voice in the decisions they are making, that they are putting on a show after already making the decisions and the meetings are nothing more than public relations exercises to give an impression of caring.

I know this is not the first time I have planned my departure but I am tired. I think I truly hate SL, I mean really HATE it. With the new emerald viewer you can’t even hide from friends without them knowing. The new beta viewer is outside my userbility and I am just to tired, I can’t do it anymore.

I am sorry everyone who I hurt with this decision, I have been dragging myself around for months in fear of how to do this but theres just no other way to say it. I hate what SL has become, and as much as I love you all. I can’t commit to being here.

I have known so many of you for so long however, and because of that, if you require my contacts to get hold of me outside SL. I will be more than willing to give those to people I trust. I have been truly blessed by my experiences in Second Life, and I love you all so much. Without you all I would not be alive today, and I truly mean that. You all have pulled me through so much.

Will post more as I figure it all out.

(Attempt 43)

Linden Lab announces changes to Xstreet SL (Important for Vendors)

Posted in BRN NEWS on November 21, 2009 by Matty

This week, Linden Lab announced that it was going to start charging listing fees and minimum commissions on its Second Life Xstreet Web-shopping site. This includeds freebies.

Within hours of the announcement thousands of vendors abandoned the service and moved to alternatives, some of the alternatives could not hold the traffic load and crashed. (Such as Slapt)

Its unsure at this point how many Second Life residents have abandoned the Xstreet SL sercice, however what is clear at this point is that freebies in particular will be hit the hardest, as of course with the fee’s nothing will be free. The majority of the vendors who are still listing products on the service have increased the price of their freebies to at least four Linden Dollars to cover the new minimum sales-commissions and listing fees.

Anything remaining as a free product will have a listing fee applied to it, and then be moved off to a category where it will not appear in search results. New monthly listing fees are being applied, and the cheapest items are to have minimum commissions.

Linden Lab indicated the move was  supported by vendors and customers during three Commerce office hours sessions, however the transcripts give the impression this was pre-arranged before the office hours went ahead, and gives he feeling that no matter how the meeting went the change was unavoidable and not truly up for debate. ( You can view these at ).

According to the figures provided, Xstreet SL has failed to capture more than a tiny fraction of overall Second Life commerce and, given the state of Xstreet’s search facilities at present and the limited integration between Xstreet and Second Life, shopping for items in-world still seems to be the more engaging experience overall..

Despite this I believe the reason for the move appears to be profit, or perhaps an attempt to cut down the cost of maintaining the Xstreet SL Service.

I would like to advise all residents who have products for sale on Xstreet SL be aware of these changes and not be hit by unexpected fee’s they may not have been notified about. It is unknown at this point how Second Life hopes to go about the move, but if past changes are anything to go by… you will most likely be expected to read a blog.
