#3 In Focus! – Animated textures.

Posted in In focus on December 29, 2008 by Matty

In Focus! this article is the unique tool that as far as I know has no name! That  lets you bring in Animated Textures (GIF files) into Second Life with ease.

With Christmas time just been, a common question I was asked was just what is the easiest way to make Christmas lights go around the frames of your doors and windows… Well the simple answer is an animated GIF…

So with that let me throw together all you need to know about how to get that animated texture into Second Life.

First you need to know how to make them! there’s videos on popular sites such as You Tube. One of my favorite videos is one using adobe image ready, however since that product has been discontinued since 2007, that doesn’t mean your out of luck… there’s website tutorials and videos on how to do it in CS3!

I personally prefer Adobe when it comes to GIFS but if you goto good you can find a lot of other software including free software, including GIMP not to mention countless tutorials for it.

Once you have your GIF made and done however, many people get lost on just what the next step is, and this is where our tool comes in, a great tool ( ) made by Peregine Salon. The tool is easily explained in three steps.

Step 1. Select an animated GIF file from your hard drive.
Step 2. Enter how many frames per second you would like the animation to play at in SL.
Step 3. Press “Process”.

It then creates a script, and give you a link to download the texture as a .tga file to apply to a prim! Simple!

The only issue you have to be rather aware of, which Peregine nicely states, with a great way and warning on how to over come it…

Is with the number of frames in the original GIF File. This is because the way that SL Animated textures work is by laying them out in a Grid and then showing the different parts of the texture. To make a two dimensional grid on a graphic.

To over come this you need to think about the number of frames. Meaning a 47 frame GIF original would need to be gridded at 47×1 which with a maximum width of 1024, would look horrible. However if you duplicate one of those frames you have 48 frames, which is a much more reasonable 8×6 grid (the script picks the most  out of the most efficient lay out give the number of frames in the original graphic) With some tweaking in Image Ready from adobe of your graphic editor of choice you can get some great results with little effort

Gees sorry for this long one, hope I didn’t get carried away by this unique tool! Enjoy and hope it makes sense!
(let me know if it doesn’t!) A big thanks to Peregine Salon for the tool and help, wishing you all a great new year.

#2 In focus! – S4SL

Posted in In focus on December 23, 2008 by Matty

In Focus this article is the unique scripting tool known as S4SL. s4sl_logo

S4SL is an easy way to add behaviors and interactivity to your objects in Second Life.

S4SL was designed by Eric Rosenbaum in association with
Lifelong Kindergarten
and MIT Media Lab. S4SL is based on Scratch, a graphical programming language that lets you construct programs by snapping together graphical blocks.

S4SL takes that a bit further and brings in to second life in the form of a neat application, the application works by snapping together a few blocks to make your SL pet interact with you using chat commands, make your sculpture change size and color, or make your house respond to your presence and much more. Not to mention a wonderful friendly user interface.

You can learn more by visiting their website where there they have a wonderful tutorial as well as a You Tube Video demonstration of the application in action! I find the tool both fun and interesting for the experienced builders (its fun to play with!!) As well as a wonderful starting point for new script writers!

#1 In focus! – SALT!

Posted in In focus on December 19, 2008 by Matty

Hello everyone! Welcome to the first of what should be a wonderful series titled ‘In Focus’ which will take a look at some interesting tools which may be of use to builders all over the Grid!primsearch

In Focus this article is the unique building tool SALT. For those of you who have no idea what SALT is, or may have heard about it but don’t not looked into yet, let’s put it into the simplest words we can,

Ever been building a big project or wanting to place a large platform to play on in the sky and gone

“ack! I don’t have a 50x50x1 megaprim to fit this building! I will have to find one!”

Then gone on a search for that megaprim and finally after hours of looking or asking people you get one and wished there was a simpler, easier way… well that’s what SALT is! That easier way!

SALT is a megaprim search engine created by SL residents Zwagoth Klaar and Latif Khalifa. Allowing you to hunt down and find the megaprim you want and get it delivered right to your inventory.

Originally there were only a few sizes of megaprims available, however when Havok4 simulators were introduced so was the bug which allowed creation of new sizes of megaprims.

You can find out more about SALT at their website, where you can also search for prims without logging in to see if they have what you need. This makes planning structures easier without that need to log into second life and if you’re like me you draw up plans before going in world.

You can get access to salt by making an account on XstreetsSL and then heading to their market listing, for a full list of all 30,000 (Yes 30,000!) megaprims you can view Zwagoth Klaar’s list via this link!

The Art Garden! A gift to SL Residents!

Posted in BRN content Updates, BRN NEWS on December 18, 2008 by Matty

The Art Garden!

We all know that Art is an important part of Second Life! Without an artistic brain we would have nearly none of the content in Second Life that we have today, to honor that Artistic nature, I have opened a Prim Art Gallery of fountains, twisted Prims and a beautiful meeting circle and moving floors!

To get there just use this SLurl
Alternatively you can visit the Low Prim store in Akihabara
(You can do this by searching the letters BRN in the places search and using the teleporter in the store to head to ‘The Garden’ by left clicking and right clicking and sitting on the beam that appears.)

All works are 0 Lindens but donations are welcome to help with the expansion of the Builders Resource Network through events and works.

It was a great success and a lot of fun! We managed to make (for our first event) a wonderful 25 people! Which means, there will be more events in the future as we make our plans for expansion.

Part of this expansion, as you will know if you managed to make it this far! Is this blog! Which we will use as a form of communication and also a tool of information passing!

Thank you for all who have donated land, time, money and creations and made this wonderful network a reality.
